Nebraska and Creighton are set for the latest installment of their rivalry on the diamond. The Huskers and Bluejays meet tonight at TD Ameritrade Park, their second of three meetings this season. The Huskers lead the all time series with Creighton with an 88-42-2 record, including wins in their last seven meetings.
Creighton (20-7, 2-1 Big East) comes into the game against Nebraska after winning a weekend series at home against conference opponent Seton Hall. Creighton held the NCAA stolen base leaders to just three stolen bases on five attempts.
Following the series with Seton Hall, the Bluejay’s ace Rollie Lacy was named Big East Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Lacy held a shutout through eight innings Friday, allowing one run on three hits. Creighton enters the game against Nebraska leading the nation in hits allowed per nine innings with 6.17 and ranked second in ERA at 2.26.
Senior first baseman Reagan Fowler found his stride at the plate against the Pirates, going 4-for-9 with four RBI’s and three runs scored. Fowler came into the series batting just .235.
Creighton comes in ranked 28th in RPI, and find themselves at 30th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 poll.
The Huskers (22-10, 7-2 Big Ten) dropped from 38th in RPI to 78th following home losses to both Kansas State (14-19) and Northwestern (8-24) last week, but won the weekend series against Northwestern. Nebraska defeated Northwestern by just one run in Friday and Saturday’s games and lost 11-3 on Sunday.
Nebraska’s bats have been hot, having five players with a batting average over .300. Junior first baseman Ben Miller leads the Huskers with a .372 batting average, while Preseason All-American and junior outfielder Ryan Boldt leads the team with 10 doubles and 16 stolen bases.
The last time these two teams met, the Huskers came out on top claiming a convincing 8-2 victory. Boldt hit two home runs with three RBIs on five hits for the Huskers.
Creighton and Nebraska will face off at 7:06 tonight at TD Ameritrade Park. Creighton’s next matchup is Wednesday against South Dakota State at 6:30. Following the matchup with the Bluejays, Nebraska has a weekend series on the road with Michigan.
