Lightning has killed 30 people this year, and that's the most since 2009

Two-thirds of the way through August, and the 30th person has been killed by lightning this year.

That's more than any previous year going back to 2009.

Most of the lightning strike victims this year have been enjoying leisure activities when they're struck by lightning.

And most of these deaths occurred across the Southeast where thunderstorms are more common.

Thunderstorms still occur in September and even October, so it's possible this number could continue to rise in the coming months.

For anyone enjoying the outdoors, it's best to go inside as soon as you hear thunder.
