Warm welcome and surprise for area students

A tradition at Mt. View school meets a twist

The first day of school is always filled with jitters and smiles, but students received a warm welcome and celebration of the incoming school year Wednesday morning.

For the 12th year in a row, Black Men United hosted the annual Million Father March at Mt. View Elementary school.

Fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other male figures are invited to line up outside the school where they shake hands, give high-fives and cheer for students as they make their way into school.

This year, organizer Willie Hamilton put out a call for women to get involved.

"Children, educators, teachers - we're all in this together," he said Wednesday when talking about encouraging children to go to school and stay on the right path.

To both his and the school's surprise, a special guest showed up. Watch the video to see the moment.
