OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — With cold weather keeping many inside, Winter is the most common time for house fires. However, there are ways to protect you and your family this season.
Papillion Fire Chief, Bill Bowes, said the four main causes for winter fires are heating, candles, cooking and smoking materials. When cooking or burning candles he recommends keeping flammable items away from the stove and flame as well as blowing out the candles and turning off the stove before you leave them unattended. "Cooking fires are really pretty easy to prevent it just takes some thought to do that," said Bowes.
Bowes also said almost every Winter firefighters run into a rash of carbon monoxide and fires early on in the season. "Furnaces should be checked yearly, just to make sure they are venting properly," he said.
Experts also recommend smokers not smoke indorrs and and be careful about where they put their cigarettes out.
