Bellevue Police Chief files lawsuits against police union

The fight over police leadership in Bellevue will head to court.

Police Chief Mark Elbert filed libel and defamation lawsuits against a police union lawyer and the president of the Nebraska chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

It comes after Elbert spent nearly a year on paid leave following a no-confidence vote by the union. A state investigation found no merit to allegations Elbert tried to deceive the department and city officials.

Elbert returned to work earlier this month.
