Omaha, NE (KMTV) - Every week families can drive up and receive an assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables. Everything from lettuce and cucumbers to peaches and strawberries.
"Having the fresh fruit and vegetables will help a lot. We eat a lot of that and now I don't have to purchase it, with almost no income," says one female from Bellevue.
Another appreciative customer adds, "It's really nice and really good to get fresh vegetables."
The free food is available every Tuesday. No IDs are necessary and there are no forms to fill out. The only question you are asked to answer is how many families are you picking up for.
"Fresh fruit and vegetables are so expensive and just beyond most people's budget, this has been a tremendous program for families on a fixed income that are just trying to make ends meet and prevent their own families from being homeless," said Candace Gregory, CEO, Open Door Mission.
You can also pick up fruit boxes for friends and neighbors.
"People have been picking up for the sick and elderly, those who have COVID-19 and even those who have lost their jobs. It has been amazing to see people bless others with this Farmers of America food boxes," adds Gregory.
Each box is valued at about $35 and one household can get at least two boxes.
Farmers of America has committed to giving out the free fruit and vegetables boxes until the beginning of November. You can pick up the boxes every Tuesday at the Open Door Mission from 8:30am - 5:00pm.
Open Door Mission is located at 2828 N. 29th Street.
