The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says 538 adoptions were finalized in the state in 2017, up from 503 in 2016.

The only year Nebraska recorded more adoptions was in 2008. Officials say the higher number can be attributed to a number of factors, but a key facor is an increase in the number of children in the state's care.

The ages of adopted children ranged from 1-year-old to 18.
