OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Our partners at the Omaha World-Herald say Marcus Wheeler, 21, was sentenced to 77 to 115 years in prison Tuesday for the April 2018 chase and shooting that killed 21-year-old Kayviaun Nelson.

Nelson died after a shooting in the parking lot of the Irvington Walmart with her 2-year-old son inside the vehicle.

Daion Williams, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was also arrested and charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting.

Prosecutors say before the fatal shooting, Nelson, Williams and Wheeler got into a fight at a Dollar General store. Nelson reportedly drove away; however, Williams and Wheeler followed her to Walmart.

Nelson left behind two young sons. She lost her mother, Vanessa Thomas, to gun violence in 2009.
