Mayor calls off private contract plows for city roads

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - The city of Omaha is opting to not call in the 175 private plow contractors to help move snow from residential streets, according to a tweet from Mayor Jean Stothert.

Rain and snow were expected overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, however, overall totals were less than initially predicted.

"City plows will remain on a 24-hour operation for several days, salting & plowing," the tweet said. "We will not use private contractors after all, since the snowfall did not accumulate as expected. Please drive safely, especially later this evening and tonight as the snow melt starts to refreeze."

Omaha has a fleet of around 110 plows, with an additional 175 private contractors.

Wind and blowing snow remain a factor for drivers across the area.
