19-year-old drowns after trying to save friend at lake north of Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. (KMTV) — A 19-year-old man died Sunday after trying to save his friend from Lake Babcock north of Columbus.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office responded to the drowning around 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Lake North/Lake Babcock waterway.

Investigation showed one person had fallen into the water and a second went in to help get his friend out. People nearby were able to rescue the first person, the Platte County Sheriff's Office says.

Nineteen-year-old Nicholas Rodriguez of Wayne drowned while attempting to rescue his friend.

Columbus Fire and Rescue, Platte County Sheriff's Dive Team, the Waterloo Fire and Rescue Department and Nebraska Game and Parks responded.

The body was recovered from Lake Babcock around 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
