A 28-year-old Iowa man was booked for felony motor-vehicle homicide after a 21-year-old Council Bluffs man was killed in a head-on crash near Cunningham Lake on Saturday night.
Tony J. Kenkel, 28, of Earling, Iowa, was booked into Douglas County Corrections for Felony Motor Vehicle Homicide and DUI – causing serious bodily injury, according to an Omaha Police Department report issued early Sunday.
According to the report, OPD was called to the scene at 7:38 p.m. Saturday after a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 36 was struck by an eastbound 2017 Chevy Silverado pick-up that crossed into the westbound lane.
The highway was closed from 84th to 96th streets about five hours and 45 minutes, the OPD report states.
Omaha Fire Medics declared the driver of the Mitsubishi dead at the scene, the police report states; the passenger of the vehicle, another 21-year-old Council Bluffs man, was transported to CHI Bergan Mercy with life-threatening injuries.
While checking the driver of the Chevy pick-up at the scene, medics said he was exhibiting signs of alcohol impairment, which prompted a DUI investigation, the report states.
