Condom prom dresses promote STD awareness

Community advocates are turning to fashion to teach lessons about sexually transmitted diseases. Prom dresses made exclusively of condoms are on display in Dundee. The goal of the project is to target adolescents ages 15 to 24.

“This message is for all adolescents because in Douglas County the 15 to 24 age group accounts for more than 50 percent of all new STD cases in this county,” said Brenda Council with the Adolescent Health Project.

Douglas County’s STD rates are among the highest in the country. Council said the condom prom dresses are grabbing attention. She hopes they also spark conversations between teens and their parents about STDs, teen pregnancies, and other reproductive issues.

The dresses are on display at Cinderella's Formal Gown Rentals at Crossroads Mall and Hello Holiday in Dundee.
