OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Douglas County Department of Corrections announced the death of an inmate on Sunday.

Officials say Daniel Walton was found unresponsive in his cell just before 10 p.m. on Saturday. Crews tried to save Walton but he was transported to Nebraska Med and later died.

The Omaha World-Herald reported on Monday that Walton asphyxiated himself with a mask issued by the Douglas County Department of Corrections.

Walton was booked into jail earlier Saturday for charges of domestic violence assault, assault by strangulation, possession of an unregistered firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

A grand jury investigation will be carried out as required by state law.
