OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, May 15, in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

This guidance is per a White House proclamation issued last Friday, May 10.

The proclamation coincides with Police Week. Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day honors those killed in the line of duty. According to the White House proclamation, there were 106 officers who lost their lives on duty last year.

The Department of Justice is continuing to work on initiatives that provide funding for bulletproof vests, active shooter training, and other programs that bolster the physical and mental health of officers.
