DELANO, CA (KMTV) – Lawrence Phillips, former Nebraska Cornhusker football player, has died. Prison staff found his body in his cell at Kern Valley State Prison early Wednesday morning.
The prison system says guards were performing a regular check when they found Phillips’ body.
Phillips entered the California prison system in 2008, after a judge sentenced him to 31 years for inflicting great bodily injury in a domestic violence case.
Phillips was currently charged with killing his cell mate last April. Tuesday a judge ruled there is enough evidence in the case for Phillips to stand trial.
Phillips was a star running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the team’s dominant run in the mid-90’s.
