The family of an inmate at the Lincoln Correctional Center serving 30-35 years for second-degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend in 2013 said he was stabbed 20 times on Sunday, 3 News Now partner Omaha World Herald is reporting.
Mikael Loyd, 23, was reportedly stabbed 20 times with a "homemade weapon," his grandmother, Deidra Loyd of Omaha, told the World-Herald. He underwent surgeries after a near-fatal neck wound, and remained in a Lincoln hospital, the grandmother said.
Prison officials confirmed an altercation had taken place, but would not identify the inmates involved.
Diagnosed with a mental illness as a teen, Mikael Loyd was sentenced for the death of Melissa K. Rodiguez, 19, strangling her hours after walking away from a mental-health treatment center. Her body was found in a grave at Graceland Park Cemetery.
