Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has officially charged a man after he stole a car with children inside on Tuesday night.
DCSO officials said at 6:00 p.m., they were was dispatched to Douglas County Corrections regarding a possible kidnapping and theft.
26-year-old Bany Nyuon, had just been released from Corrections on a trespassing charge.
Officials said that after walking out of Corrections, Nyuon entered a running, unlocked vehicle that was parked in the Corrections parking lot. In the back seat of the vehicle were three children ages 7, 2, and 1.
The driver of the vehicle, 47-year-old Shaquita Mitchell, had gone into Corrections and estimated she had been away from the vehicle for about 5 minutes.
Nyuon exited the parking lot driving the vehicle, a 2003 silver Cadillac.
A few minutes later, an Omaha Police Officer observed the vehicle, stopped at a light near 13th & Leavenworth.
The officer positioned his vehicle in front of the Cadillac and arrested Nyuon at gunpoint. The children were found buckled in the back seat, visibly frightened and crying but unharmed.
Nyuon was transported back to Corrections and booked on three counts of kidnapping and theft. 47-year-old Mitchell was cited for child neglect.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
