The Nebraska Department of Transportation is making their final preparations for the forecasted winter weather and issued a release remind driver to prepare for winter travel.

The NDOT said travel should only be made if it is necessary and your vehicle should have warm clothing, food and water.

“While our NDOT crews are prepared to clear the roads, it is important for motorists to stay informed on the latest weather forecast and to plan ahead if travel is required,” NDOT Director Kyle Schneweis said.

Highway maintenance superintendent Jim Laughlin says there will be 40 snowplows ready to go and ice will be their main focus.

With snowplows on the roads, the NDOT says travelers should should make sure to do the following:

- Slow down as you approach plows because they travel at 25-30 MPH.

- Give plows plenty of room.

- Never pass a plow on the right.
