OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Projections from Hurricane Laura are getting worse, but a group of Nebraska First Responders are ready to help.

Nebraska Task Force 1 was deployed to College Station, Texas. That’s where they’ll be ready to help with water search and rescues once the hurricane hits. It’s now projected to be a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 140 mph.

The rescue team includes 25 firefighters from Omaha, Lincoln, Papillion, Grand Island, and other departments.

They have the skills and equipment for the long haul.

“Hurricanes can spawn massive flooding, hurricanes can spawn tornadoes, they can spawn its own weather system basically. So it’s kind of a myriad of anything that can happen can go,” said Nic Cunningham with NE Task Force 1.

It’s unclear how long they’ll be in Texas.

The hurricane is expected to hit landfall Wednesday night.
