A motorcyclist was injured after colliding with an SUV running a red light Wednesday afternoon near 28th & Dodge streets.

Just before 2:18 p.m., a motorcyclist on a blue 2017 Suzuki GSX r1000 was traveling westbound on Dodge Street when he hit the side of a white 2009 Chevrolet Equinox as it was northbound on 28th Street, near the Interstate 480 North on-ramp, OPD officers said.

Witnesses said Shannon Barritt, 49, of Des Moines, ran a red light, OPD said. Barritt was cited for traffic signal violation and improper display of plates.

The 21-year-old motorcyclist, who officers said was wearing a helmet, was taken to Nebraska Medicine with serious — but not life-threatening — injuries, including multiple facial fractures, a compound arm fracture, numerous abrasions, and a severe concussion, the OPD release states.

Speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, the OPD release states.
