Omaha Police have identified the pedestrian who died after being hit by a semi-truck on I-680 Monday morning.

According to a release, 25-year-old Zachary Crinklaw entered the path of the semi from the westbound outside shoulder, he died at the scene.

The driver of the semi was 52-year-old Michel Stone.

Interstate 680 Westbound was closed at 48th Street from around 5:30 until 8:30 Monday morning.

The National Safety Council says walking on major highways should always be avoided.

"Stay off travel lanes, stay off interstate and major highways," said Eric Koeppe.

If you ever find yourself in this situation there are things you can do to protect yourself.

"Find an area that you can get to that has sidewalks that you can get off the surface of travel," said Koeppe.

If something happens and you're looking for help Koeppe says to wear bright clothing and be visible.

"If for some reason your car becomes disabled it's always easier to call someone for help, the safest place you can be is your car," said Koeppe.
