OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — A man has been arrested in the killing of a registered sex offender in Omaha.

James Fairbanks, 43, has been arrested for the alleged murder of Mattieo Condoluci, 64.

Police responded to shooting call near 43rd and Pinkney on Saturday around 11:15 a.m. Condoluci was found deceased on the scene when officers arrived.

Fairbanks was booked into the Douglas County Corrections for criminal homicide on Tuesday.

Condoluci is a registered sex offender and served a five year sentence for sexually assaulting a child in 2006 in Sarpy County, and was also convicted in Florida of a similar crime in 1993. He got probation in that case.

Prosecutors believe Fairbanks sent an anonymous email to the local media explaining why he allegedly did it. It indicates the killer knew about Condoluci’s past crimes against children, and saw him staring at kids playing near his home. It later says the killer worked with kids for years that have been victimized, and couldn’t allow him to do it to anyone else.

Fairbanks has been a Paraprofessional with Omaha Public Schools for the last 3 and a half years.

Some people on social media are calling Fairbanks a hero, and asking him to be freed.

”I feel an overwhelming sense of relief he is dead! I lay in bed too many nights wondering who's life he is destroying now! I know now he isn't hurting any more children and their loved ones. Sexual abuse does not just affect the victim,” said Lisa Smith, the mother of one of Condoluci’s child victims.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact The Homicide Unit at 402-444-5656 or Omaha Crime Stoppers anonymously at (402) 444-STOP, at www.omahacrimestoppers.org [email.mg.dotcomm.org] or on the P3 Tips mobile app.
