MURRAY, Neb. (KMTV) — A massive Lincoln water treatment project is projected to come in 2048, but early plans spark concern for Cass County neighbors.

BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:

A plot of land in Cass County could become the site of a massive water treatment facility operated by the city of Lincoln, raising concerns among nearby residents about property values and quality of life.

The Sorensen family lives just outside of Murray, where they built their dream home seeking peace and quiet. They weren't pleased to learn Lincoln is considering the land directly across the street for a water treatment plant.

"We just enjoy it. I enjoy landscaping, my husband does a lot of work outside in his shop," a family member said.

The family has invested significantly in their property and worries about the impact on resale value.

"We have invested a lot in our property here and we want to make sure our property value remains high for resale. We don't want a water treatment plant across the road," they said.

When I spoke to the city of Lincoln, officials said their goal is to have the treatment plant operational by 2048, with construction not expected to begin for another 10 years.

"We've continued to engage elected officials, the county commissioners, the planning boards to make sure that we're following all of the procedures, that we're hearing all of the voices," a city representative said.

Drawing water from the Missouri River, the proposed plant would treat approximately 40 million gallons per day. The Sorensen family said that even though the timeline seems distant, they want their concerns heard before it's too late.
