The Omaha hockey team is ranked fifth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference annual preseason media poll. The Mavericks are entering their fourth season in the NCHC, last season they were picked fourth in the preseason poll and finished sixth with an overall record of 18-17-1 and conference record of 8-15-1-0/0.
Maverick senior forward Austin Ortega was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Ortega was fourth in the NCHC last year with a career-high 21 goals including an NCAA-best eight game-winning goals. He finished the season with 36 points and is the NCHC's active career scoring leader with 92 points.
The UNO Mavericks open their season with an exhibition game against Alberta on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:07 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
