Omaha Burke's senior point guard Shereef Mitchell was named Gatorade's 2018 Player of the Year. Mitchell becomes the first ever Burke Bulldog to win the award.

According to Gatorade, the award "recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, and distinguishes Mitchell as Nebraska’s best high school boys basketball player".

The 6'0", 155-pound point guard led Omaha Burke to the district semifinals while averaging 24.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

Mitchell recorded a 3.57 GPA in the classroom and will play a post-graduate season in prep school before deciding which college to attend.
